In a continuing effort to keep you, your accounts and your personal, private information safe and secure we want to alert you to a growing fraudulent activity known as Mailbox Fishing.
Mailbox Fishing is an activity conducted by criminals who use a collection of glue and/or glue traps and string to “fish” into US Post Office Mailboxes in an effort to pull letters and corresponding checks out of the mailbox. Once a check is retrieved it is “washed” or altered to change the payees name and often times the amount. The checks are then deposited via an ATM or remotely to evade detection.
Protect Yourself
You can protect yourself by:
- Paying your bills online or through automatic payments.
- If you need to mail a check drop it off inside the Post Office.
- If you use a mailbox make sure it is one of the newer boxes which feature a smaller mail slot and anti-theft enhancements.
- Monitor your bank account through Online Banking or Mobile Banking to verify your payments are cashed by the intended payee.
